How To Replace the Ejector Gear

Overview

Ice makers come in two types: those with individually replaceable parts and those with parts clustered into a control module. To determine which model you have, remove the outer face plate. If there is a knob, pull it off first, then pry off the face plate with a small screwdriver.

Caution

Please read our safety information before attempting any testing or repairs.

Before replacing the ejector gear, unplug the freezer to avoid an electrical shock hazard.

Identifying the Ice Maker Type

  1. Modular Units:
    • Modular units have holes in the module’s face plate for test probes, each marked with a letter.
    • The gears in modular units are enclosed, and the entire module must be replaced.

  2. Component Units:
    • Component units can be identified by their exposed gears and lack of holes for test probes.
    • In component units, you can replace the ejector gears individually.

Replacing the Ejector Gear in Component Units

  1. Locate the Ejector Gear:
    • There are two exposed gears that mesh together.
  2. Visual Inspection:
    • Inspect the gears for cracks, worn or missing teeth.
    • If either of the gears is worn, they may fail to turn the ejector cam, which pushes the ice out from the ice mold.

Steps to Replace the Ejector Gear

  1. Unplug the Freezer:
    • Ensure the freezer is unplugged to avoid electrical shock.
  2. Remove the Face Plate:
    • If there is a knob, pull it off first.
    • Pry off the face plate with a small screwdriver.
  3. Identify the Gear(s) to Replace:
    • Determine which gear needs to be replaced (it may be worthwhile to replace both now).
    • Inspect how the gear is held in place. Some gears use retainer clips while others simply slip over the shaft.
  4. Remove the Old Gear:
    • Remove the retainer clip using a small screwdriver or needle-nose pliers.
    • Pry the gear up and off of the shaft.
  5. Install the New Gear:
    • Align the new gear with the flat spot on the shaft (if any) and with the other gear.
    • Firmly press the gear into place. It may be helpful to use a tool such as a small diameter socket to press the gear down over the shaft.
  6. Reassemble the Ice Maker:
    • Replace the cover plate and knob (if any).
    • Move the shutoff arm down into the “on” position.
    • Plug in the freezer and test the ice maker.

By following these steps, you can successfully replace the ejector gear in your ice maker. If you encounter any issues or are unsure about any steps, refer to the troubleshooting guide or consider consulting a professional technician.
