How To Replace the Evaporator Fan

The evaporator fan is located at the back of the freezer. It may be necessary to remove obstructions such as the contents of the freezer, freezer shelves, ice maker, and the rear inside panel of the freezer.

Before replacing the fan, unplug the refrigerator to avoid an electrical shock hazard.

Steps to Replace the Evaporator Fan:

  1. Empty the Freezer:
    • Remove all contents of the freezer to access the evaporator fan area.
  2. Remove Freezer Shelves and Ice Maker:
    • If necessary, remove the freezer shelves and ice maker to gain access to the rear panel.
    • The ice maker may be held in place by screws. Disconnect any electrical connectors to the ice maker.
  3. Remove the Rear Inside Panel:
    • The rear panel may be held in place by retainer clips or screws.
    • Remove the screws or depress the retainer clips with a small screwdriver.
    • Carefully pull off the rear panel to expose the evaporator fan.
  4. Access the Evaporator Fan:
    • The evaporator fan is usually located behind the rear panel.
    • Identify the fan and its mounting bracket.
  5. Disconnect the Fan Wiring:
    • The fan motor will have electrical connectors. Label the wires to ensure proper reconnection later.
    • Disconnect the wiring connectors by firmly pulling them off the terminals.
  6. Remove the Fan and Bracket:
    • The fan is typically secured to a mounting bracket with screws. Remove these screws.
    • Carefully pull the fan and bracket assembly out of the freezer.
  7. Install the New Evaporator Fan:
    • Position the new evaporator fan in the same location as the old one.
    • Secure the fan to the mounting bracket with screws.
  8. Reconnect the Wiring:
    • Reconnect the electrical connectors to the new fan motor, ensuring the wires match the labels.
  9. Reassemble the Freezer:
    • Replace the rear inside panel by securing it with the retainer clips or screws.
    • Reinstall the freezer shelves and ice maker if they were removed.
    • Plug in the electrical connectors to the ice maker if it was disconnected.
  10. Restore Power:
    • Plug the refrigerator back in.
    • Test the new evaporator fan by setting the freezer to a cool setting and ensuring the fan operates properly.
