How to Replace the Float Assembly in a Dishwasher
The float assembly in a dishwasher is responsible for regulating the water level. As water fills the tub, the float rises, eventually triggering the float switch to turn off the water flow. If the float assembly is malfunctioning, it can lead to water overflow or inadequate water levels.
Caution: Please read our safety information before attempting any testing or repairs.
Important Safety Notice: Before replacing the float assembly, unplug the dishwasher or shut off the power at the fuse box or breaker panel to avoid an electrical shock hazard.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Screwdriver (Phillips and flat-head)
- Replacement float assembly
- Pliers (if needed)
- Safety gloves
Steps to Replace the Float Assembly
Step 1: Safety First
- Turn Off Power: Ensure that the dishwasher is unplugged or the circuit breaker is turned off to prevent any electrical shock.
- Turn Off Water Supply: If necessary, turn off the water supply to the dishwasher.
Step 2: Access the Float Assembly
- Open the Dishwasher: Open the dishwasher door and remove the bottom rack to gain clear access to the float assembly.
- Locate the Float: The float is typically located at the bottom of the dishwasher tub.
Step 3: Remove the Float Cover and Float
- Remove the Float Cover: If the float has a cover, remove it. The cover may snap in place or be secured with a screw. Use a screwdriver to remove any screws and then lift off the cover.
- Remove the Float: The float usually rests or snaps in place. Gently pull it upwards to remove it. If it does not come off easily, it may need to be disconnected from the float switch first.
Step 4: Access the Bottom of the Tub
- Locate the Throat of the Float Assembly: The throat of the float assembly goes through the bottom of the tub.
- Remove the Nut(s): There may be a nut securing the float assembly either on the tub side or under the tub in the access area. Use pliers to unscrew the nut(s).
Step 5: Remove the Front Access Panel
- Remove the Panel: To access the float assembly where it connects to the float switch, remove the front access panel located beneath the door. The panel is usually held in place with pressure snaps, screws, or hooks.
- Remove Screws: Look for screws along the left and right ends of the panel. Remove these screws and pull off the panel.
- Lift the Panel: If there are no screws, try lifting the panel up and off. If it does not lift, pull the panel off straight toward you with a small force.
Step 6: Disconnect the Float Assembly
- Disconnect the Rod from the Switch: The float connects to a rod which then connects to the float switch. Disconnect the rod from the switch.
Step 7: Install the New Float Assembly
- Connect the New Rod to the Switch: Attach the new rod to the float switch.
- Insert the Rod into the Throat: Insert the rod into the throat and then insert the throat through the bottom of the tub.
- Secure with Nut(s): Secure the float assembly with the nut(s) from the tub side or under the tub.
Step 8: Reassemble the Dishwasher
- Replace the Float: Insert the new float into place.
- Replace the Float Cover: If there was a cover, snap it back into place or secure it with a screw.
- Reattach the Front Access Panel: Replace the access panel by securing it with screws or snapping it back into place.
- Replace the Bottom Rack: Put the bottom rack back into the dishwasher.
Step 9: Test the Dishwasher
- Restore Power and Water Supply: Turn the power and water supply back on.
- Run a Test Cycle: Run a short test cycle to ensure the dishwasher operates correctly and the new float assembly functions properly.
Tips and Warnings
- Consult the Manual: Always refer to your dishwasher’s user manual for specific instructions related to your model.
- Use Genuine Parts: Use genuine replacement parts for optimal performance and longevity.
- Check for Leaks: After reassembly, check for any leaks around the float assembly area.
- Seek Professional Help: If you are unsure about any step or if the problem persists, consider seeking help from a professional technician.
By following these steps, you can effectively replace the float assembly in your dishwasher and ensure it operates correctly. Regular maintenance and timely repairs will help keep your dishwasher running efficiently and extend its lifespan.
