How To Replace the Shutoff Switch

Replacing the shutoff switch in your ice maker ensures that the ice maker stops producing ice when the bin is full. Follow these steps to replace the shutoff switch:

Caution:

Please read our safety information before attempting any testing or repairs.

Before replacing the shutoff switch, unplug the refrigerator to avoid an electrical shock hazard.

Determine Your Ice Maker Type

  1. Remove the Outer Face Plate:
    • If there is a knob, pull it off first.
    • Pry off the face plate with a small screwdriver.
  2. Identify the Unit Type:
    • Modular Units: Have holes in the module’s face plate for test probes, each marked with a letter. Refer to the section: control module for replacement instructions.
    • Component Units: Typically have exposed gears and no holes for test probes. Follow the steps below for these units.

Replacing the Shutoff Switch in a Component Ice Maker

  1. Remove the Ice Maker:
    • The unit is usually mounted to the freezer case by two or more screws.
    • Remove the bottom screws first. While supporting the ice maker, remove the remaining top screws.
    • Unplug the ice maker from the freezer cabinet if you have not already done so.
  2. Reduce Spring Tension:
    • Along the edge nearest the shutoff arm, a pin protrudes through the mounting plate (labeled “A” below).
    • The arm pin has a spring under the mounting plate.
    • Reduce the tension on the spring by moving the shutoff arm into the “on” position, down, against the ice maker.
  3. Remove the Mounting Plate:
    • Remove any screws or clips securing the mounting plate.
  4. Disconnect the Shutoff Switch:
    • The shutoff switch will be connected by wires.
    • Label the wire placement on the switch before disconnecting the wires.
    • The wires are connected to the switch with slip-on connectors. Firmly pull the connectors off the switch terminals (do not pull on the wire). You may need to use a pair of needle-nose pliers to remove the connectors.
  5. Inspect and Replace the Shutoff Switch:
    • Inspect the connectors and the terminals for corrosion. If the connectors are corroded, they should be replaced.
    • Install the new shutoff switch by connecting the wires to the appropriate terminals.
    • Secure the switch in place.
  6. Reassemble the Ice Maker:
    • Reattach the mounting plate and secure it with screws or clips.
    • Align the arm pin with the mounting plate and ensure the spring is properly positioned.
    • Remount the ice maker in the freezer compartment. Secure it with screws, starting with the top screws and then the bottom screws.
    • Plug the ice maker back into the freezer cabinet.
  7. Test the Ice Maker:
    • Plug in the refrigerator.
    • Verify that the ice maker is functioning properly and the shutoff switch stops the ice production when the bin is full.

Following these steps will help you replace the shutoff switch in your ice maker, ensuring it operates efficiently and effectively.
