How To Test the Temperature Control

Most refrigerator-freezers have a control that adjusts the operation of the cooling system of the freezer only. In such appliances, any control for the refrigerator is simply a mechanical system of opening or closing vents between the refrigerator and freezer to let in more or less cold air.

Caution:

Please read our safety information before attempting any testing or repairs.

Before testing the control, unplug the refrigerator to avoid an electrical shock hazard.

Steps to Test the Temperature Control:

  1. Remove the Temperature Control Dial or Housing:
    • Pull the temperature control dial straight away from the wall to remove it.
    • If the control is housed, the housing may snap into place or be held by screws.
  2. Access the Temperature Control:
    • If the housing is held by screws, remove the screws.
    • If the housing is held by retaining clips, gently depress the clips with a small screwdriver.
    • Allow the housing to hang by its wiring.
  3. Inspect the Temperature Control:
    • Look for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  4. Test the Temperature Control:
    • Use a multimeter set to the ohms setting (Ω) to test for continuity.
    • Place one probe on each terminal of the temperature control.
    • Rotate the control knob through its range of settings.
    • The multimeter should show continuity at some settings (usually the colder settings) and no continuity at others (usually the warmer settings).
  5. Interpret the Results:
    • If the multimeter shows no continuity at any setting, the temperature control is likely faulty and needs to be replaced.
    • If the multimeter shows continuity at all settings, the temperature control is also likely faulty and needs to be replaced.
    • If the multimeter shows proper changes in continuity, the temperature control is likely functioning correctly.
  6. Reassemble the Temperature Control:
    • If the temperature control is functioning correctly, reassemble it by snapping the housing back into place or securing it with screws.
    • Reattach the temperature control dial.
  7. Restore Power:
    • Plug the refrigerator back in.
    • Test the refrigerator and freezer temperatures to ensure proper operation.

Summary:

Testing the temperature control in a refrigerator-freezer involves removing the control dial or housing, inspecting the control, and using a multimeter to check for continuity. Proper safety precautions, such as unplugging the refrigerator, must be taken to avoid electrical hazards. If the temperature control does not show proper continuity, it should be replaced.
